Boston Wins The Cup
After over eight months and 100-plus games of hockey, the Stanley Cup is returning to Boston for the first time in 39 years. The Boston Bruins finally won a game in Vancouver to claim Game 7 and a 4-3 series win over the Canucks.
The tension of a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup finals is quite simply indescribable and it made for an intriguing opening to the final chapter of the 2010/11 NHL season. The Canucks actually controlled play for the opening 10 minutes or so, forcing Tim Thomas to make a couple of tough saves, though a net presence was still clearly missing.
Through the first six games of the series, the home team had won every game and the team scoring first had won every game. The Bruins made sure that one of those would not be true after Game 7 when they opened the scoring with five minutes left in the first period. Brad Marchand controlled the puck in the offensive zone and found the space to feed Patrice Bergeron in the slot. The goal was Bergeron’s first of the series. It was a similar story in the second period where Vancouver dominated the shot count, but didn’t have a net presence and didn’t earn second chance opportunities. Meanwhile, the Bruins didn’t test Roberto Luongo frequently, but earned several quality chances thanks to lots of offensive zone time.
Boston’s second line was in dominant form all night and they created the second goal when Marchand once again found space and time in the offensive zone. He skated behind the net and took advantage of defensive confusion to score on the wraparound. It was Marchand’s 10th goal of the postseason, impressive output for a rookie.
Vancouver earned a late power-play in the second period, but it clearly wasn’t their night when a funny bounce off the board sprang Patrice Bergeron shorthanded. He held position on the Canucks’ defensive and drove to the net where the puck found a way past Luongo to make it 3-0.
Marchand capped off the game 4-0 late in the third in a period where Vancouver never really threatened.
The parade is scheduled in Boston for 11am on Saturday. It has been another wonderful NHL season.
