Detroit Red Wings Season Preview 2011-12
Nicklas Lidstrom’s announcement that he would be back for a 20th NHL season made sure that Detroit GM Ken Holland’s only job was to tweak the roster, and larger adjustments are not yet needed. The Red Wings return with a fairly unaltered roster, and the look of a Cup contender once more. The team watched several veterans leave during the offseason including: Chris Osgood, Kris Draper, Mike Modano, Ruslan Salei and Brian Rafalski. Holland added Mike Commodore and Ian White to reinforce the blue-line, while Chris Connor was added to forward group, along with tryout Fabian Brunnstrom, who was recently signed.
Crucial to the Red Wings staying on top will be the contribution of its younger players. Jan Mursak is expected to make a contribution when he returns from injury, Corey Emmerton has earned a roster spot out of camp. Tomas Tartar could make some appearances during the season, while defensemen Jakub Kindl and Brendan Smith are bound to get their opportunities during the course of the season. The forward group is deep, the blue-line should be fine led by Lidstrom, and Jimmy Howard returns to the crease. Coach Mike Babcock has an excellent team at his disposal once again, and Detroit returns a contender once again.
Forwards
Chemistry won’t be an issue with a group that has remained virtually unchanged for the last couple of seasons. Dan Cleary could miss the start of the season, but when he returns, he is likely to line-up alongside familiar partner Pavel Datsyuk. Cleary had another good season in 2010-11 potting 26 goals. It really is impossible to say too much about Datsyuk. He is one of the game’s very best two-way centers and an offensive genius. Injuries limited him to just 56 games last season; the Red Wings hope that number improves in 2011-12. One player who needs to improve in 2010-11 is Jiri Hudler. Hudler had a disappointing 37 points after returning to the NHL last season. He could start on Datsyuk’s wing, but won’t stay there long if he doesn’t produce.
Henrik Zetterberg centers the second line, and is also one of the league’s very best two-way players. Zetterberg led the team in Datsyuk’s absence with an 80-point campaign, his highest total since 2007-08. Zetterberg will start off flanked by Johan Franzen and Valterri Filppula. Filppula also had a disappointing performance in 2010-11 with just 39 points. He will have an important role on the second line, and will need to produce if he wants to keep that role with talent youngsters like Gustav Nyquist in the minors. Franzen potted 28 goals mostly playing alongside Zetterberg last season and has taken over many of Tomas Holmstrom’s responsibilities as the big body in front of the net in the top six. Darren Helm impressed a lot of people during the preseason. Helm has a lot of speed and a lot of skill, he is expected to center a third line featuring a couple of physical wingers in Todd Bertuzzi and Justin Abdelkader. Abdelkader also had a strong preseason, and there are signs that this line could contribute regular offense. Ultimately Babcock will probably switch the lines up a fair amount during the course of the season, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tomas Holmstrom start the season as a fourth line power-play specialist. Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Fabian Brunnstrom and Corey Emmerton are all also competing for roster spots on the bottom couple of lines as the last few practices take place before opening night.
Defense
Lidstrom ensures that this blue-line still looks strong. The team’s captain finished second on the team in scoring with 62 points and won his seventh Norris Tophy last year, that’s right seventh. Every year it looks less and less likely that Lidstrom will return, but he must still be a little tempted to hang around and try to win one more Cup with this strong veteran line-up. Lidstrom’s partner Rafalski retired this offseason leaving a space next to him. It is possible that Babcock will go for a similar style defenseman in Ian White, or he could turn to Jonathan Ericsson to take on a bigger shutdown role. Ericsson received a new contract during the offseason, and has spent the last two seasons refining defensive game to the point where he is a very reliable part of this unit.
It seems almost certain that the Brad Stuart-Nicklas Kronwall pair will stay together. Both players play with a physical edge and have a little offensive upside. Kronwall had 37 points last season and should take on an even bigger offensive role in Rafalski’s absence, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him score 40-50 points in 2011-12. White could round out the blue-line playing alongside second year defenseman Kindl. Kindl improved during the course of the 2010-11 season and should be more reliable for Babcock this year. Commodore will also be an option as he tries to stick with an NHL club following a demotion to the AHL last season.
Goaltending
This position requires almost no discussion. Jimmy Howard has made the job his own, and although his numbers dropped slightly in 2010-11 compared to his rookie season, they were still solid, and will probably rise again this season. Howard has a nice style and his development has been managed well by the Wings’ organisation. Ty Conklin returns to take care of back-up duties.
