Nashville Predators Season Preview 2011-12
Nashville enters the 2011-12 season on a high after winning the franchise’s first ever playoff series this past Spring. However, for a team like the Predators, every season is a new and difficult challenge. A low payroll meant that they were forced to part with a few more useful NHLers this offseason, but once again GM David Poile has a team with a clear identity that can play Trotz/Predator hockey and compete for a playoff place. Exits from last year’s roster included JP Dumont, Cody Franson, Matthew Lombardi, Marcel Goc, Steve Sullivan, Joel Ward and Shane O’Brien. However, as usual, Poile picked up a few useful bargains and Nashville appears to have a few good young players coming through the ranks to plug the gaps. Niclas Bergfors, Jack Hillen, Tyler Sloan and Zack Stortini were amongst the main additions.
Importantly, winning a playoff series has sparked a change in the expectations and desires of this franchise. Nashville will face an important juncture in its history this offseason as Shea Weber, Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne all come to the end of their contracts. If the franchise is to continue its successful tradition, then performing well enough to convince those three players to stay will be important.
Forwards
Mike Fisher starts the season on IR, but would have taken over as the team’s #1 center. Fisher brings a strong two-way game and could score 50-60 points in an offensive role with Nashville. Cal O’Reilly is the most likely player to take over that role in Fisher’s absence. O’Reilly had 18 points in 38 games last year and acquitted himself solidly when given offensive responsibility. Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn will be the first line flanks. Kostitsyn thrived in his first season with the Predators scoring 50 points, and has the talent to score more. Erat has quietly been a very consistent offensive player in Nashville over seven seasons or so consistently scoring 50 points on a defense first team.
An intriguing second line in camp has featured David Legwand, Niclas Bergfors and Colin Wilson. If there is to be an explosive offensive line for Nashville this season, it will probably be this one. Bergfors is a former first round pick and highly-rated offensive player, but he has never quite put it all together. In Nashville he is likely to get a consistent top six opportunity. Meanwhile, Wilson is also a first round pick, and very much due a breakout after he managed just 34 points last season. Legwand has earned a reputation as a superb defensive center, but he himself had 67 points in the 2006-07 season. Patric Hornqvist will probably flank exciting prospect Blake Geoffrion. Hornqvist backed up a 30-goal campaign in 2009-10 with 21 in 2010-11. The other wing on this line looks set to be college graduate Craig Smith. It remains to be seen how Smith adjusts to the pro game, but he enjoyed an impressive camp. Nick Spaling, Jordin Tootoo and Jered Smithson will probably be united on a checking, physical fourth line. Matt Halischuk looks set to start the year as the 13th forward, while Kyle Wilson and Gabriel Bourque will be the first call-ups.
Defense
Weber and Suter have been mainstays of this Nashville blue-line for over six seasons, and while they are still here, there is a feeling that the defensive corps will hold together. Weber finished third for scoring on the team with 48 points, while Suter scored 39, and had a team high +20. Few teams can claim to have quite such a balanced pair as their 1-2 punch. They regularly play 25+ minutes a night and play against the best offensive forwards in the league. Weber and Suter has been the team’s core throughout their recent success.
With Franson departed, young defenseman Jonathon Blum will take on extra responsibility on the second pair. Blum was very assured and very impressive in a 23-game stint at the end of last season. He has put up good numbers in the AHL, and clearly has offensive ability, but coach Barry Trotz will probably ask him to focus on the defensive side of his game for this season. His partner will probably be the increasingly experienced Kevin Klein. Klein enters his fourth full season with the Preds. Jack Hillen will likely start on the third pair, while a pair of rookies in Mattias Ekholm and Teemu Laakso battle it out for the last spot in the line-up. The ability of Nashville to keep producing NHL calibre defenseman is extremely impressive. Francois Boullion will also take a spot in the line-up when he returns from injury.
Goaltending
Pekka Rinne returns after being a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2010-11. Rinne finished with an incredible .930 save percentage and 2.12 GAA, both of which are career bests. He also played a career high 64 games. His .930 save percentage would have been far more raved about had Tim Thomas not set a new save percentage record in the same season. Rinne is one of the league’s top goalies and he plays for a team with a good defensive system.
The team also knows it has a reliable back-up in the talented Anders Lindback. The 23-year old Swede did very well in his first NHL season, playing in 22 games and posting a .915 save percentage and 2.60 GAA. Lindback will probably play a similar number of games this season as Trotz tries to keep Rinne fresh for the playoff run.
