Winnipeg Jets Season Preview 2011-12
NHL hockey has returned to Winnipeg, the city and the team are buzzing, and teams can expect an extremely difficult road trip into the small, packed building in Manitoba. Winnipeg is also lucky in that it inherits a franchise that was very much on the way up with lots of young talent. Atlanta started 2011 in a playoff place, and it took a dramatic slump in the second half to drop them out of the postseason. The core from that roster returns and will no doubt have learned a lot from the experience. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff didn’t make too many major moves during the offseason; choosing rather to make minor adjustments and see how the younger players develop.
The additions did include talented scorer Eric Fehr, fourth line enforcer Tanner Glass, depth scorer Kyle Wellwood and depth defenseman Randy Jones. New coach Claude Noel will have the task of trying to introduce a solid defensive system, while not sacrificing his team’s offensive flair. If he can manage that, then this is a dangerous ice hockey team and genuinely a playoff contender. The Thrashers were poor on home ice in 2010-11, often playing with vacant buildings, there will be no excuse for a poor home record in Winnipeg.
Forwards
Andrew Ladd had an incredible first season with the organisation, eventually being named captain, and breaking out in a big way with 29 goals. Ladd will need to prove that he can do it again though, he looks set to play on the team’s top line with a combination in Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler that worked sweetly last time. Little hasn’t hit the dizzy heights of his 31-goal rookie season, but the talent is definitely there to produce at that level again. Wheeler’s offensive game stagnated during his last two seasons in Boston, but he showed signs of breaking out of that with 17 points in 23 games following his trade to Atlanta.
The second line is a similar story as the Jets will rely on career years from players’ who are due them. Evander Kane has teased fans with 26 and 44 points in his first two seasons respectively. He has the potential to be a legitimate power forward, and he should be the leader on what looks like an extremely talented second line. He is expected to be joined by Nik Antropov and Alexander Burmistrov. Antropov is due a bounce back year after a disappointing performance in 2010-11, while Burmistrov only scored six goals in his rookie season; that’s a figure that could jump to between 20 and 30 quite easily this season. Eric Fehr is also expected to compete for a top six spot when he returns to the line-up, but he is expected to miss the first month. Mark Scheifele looks to have secured a spot in the opening night line-up. Scheifele has been a real surprise and looks set to center the team’s third line. Scheifele will have a couple of reasonably talented line mates if that is the case as he would probably be playing with Ben Maxwell and Kyle Wellwood. Maxwell has been a good offensive producer in the AHL, and now looks likely to get his opportunity in the NHL. The team’s fourth line will probably feature two physical energy forwards in Glass and Chris Thorburn centered by Jim Slater. Slater has been a staple of this organisation ever since the lockout. He has a little offensive spark and provides good energy from the fourth line.
Defense
Cheveldayoff does inherit a strong blue-line from his predecessor. It is also a blue-line that helps out a lot on the offensive side of the ice. Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien seem to compliment each other well, both at even strength and on the power-play. The pair finished third and second on the team for points last season with 53 and 51 respectively. Byfuglien was a real surprise after being switched back to defense he really took off in Atlanta last season; he has offensive smarts gained from his time playing forward, he also has a great shot. Enstrom is quicker and more of a playmaker, he led the team with 41 assists.
Zach Bogosian is signed and should be ready to take a step forward in 2011-12. Bogosian has been inconsistent since a promising start to his career, hockey sense is perhaps the one concern about this talented defenseman. If Bogosian can put it all together, he could give Winnipeg one of the better top threes in the league. That is still a big if, at least Noel will expect him to surpass his 17-point effort from 2010-11. Bogosian’s partner isn’t clear at this point as it depends on how Noel decides to structure his defense. If he goes for a predominant top four then Ron Hainsey is the likeliest partner. Hainsey is a solid, quiet defenseman who can ice significant minutes. A more balanced blue-line might see the physical Mark Stuart pair with Bogosian, and the versatile Johnny Oduya play alongside Hainsey. Jones rounds out a deep blue-line as a solid seventh defenseman.
Goaltending
David Aebischer has signed with Winnipeg and could take the back-up position from veteran Chris Mason. Mason looked a bit shaky in the crease last season, though the Jets will hope that either goaltender will only be needed to back up Ondrej Pavelec relatively little. Pavelec took a step forward last season posting a .914 save percentage in 58 games, but Winnipeg needs him to stay healthy and perhaps start another 10 games or more. This is the year for Pavelec to emerge as a true #1 starter.
