North American Disappointment At World Juniors
It was a frustrating World Juniors Championship for both of the North American representatives, though perhaps for different reasons. Canada are ever-expectant at any international hockey competition, and would have been truly frustrated to suffer defeat at the hands of Russia once again. They can take some pride from the fact that they defeated Finland to secure the Bronze Medal, but it is likely to offer only a little consolation. For the USA, it was a stark reminder that this programme still has plenty of room for improvement. They started as one of the competition’s favourites after winning the Bronze Medal last year, but losses to Finland and Czech Republic ensured that they would not make it to the medal round. In the end, the US was forced to take comfort from a win against Switzerland, which assured them seventh place in the competition.
The word on Canada and its problems seems to be fairly simple. A loss of discipline in the second period allowed Russia to run away with the game. Boone Jenner’s incident will be most well remembered of course, but ill-disciplined penalties, both in terms of a loss of temper, and lazy stick infractions, cost this Canadian team badly. There is of course a reasonable argument here, but perhaps there is also a little bit of hiding from the truth going on. While Canada indisputably has the world’s best programme in terms of producing hockey players, this does not mean that its best four lines, six defensemen and goaltender are going to be able to beat the best from the rest of the world. Both Sweden and Russia had better and deeper roster’s in this year’s tournament, and there are signs that programmes like USA, Czech Republic, Finland and even Slovakia are catching up.
For the US, they suffered defeats to two such improving programmes, and it must remind this programme that it still has more work to do if it is to truly establish USA as an elite team alongside the likes of Canada and Russia. The win over Switzerland was a small consolation, and it was a positive end to an impressive World Junior career for Jack Campbell, but expect a more determined team at next year’s competition.
