Antero Niittymaki on waivers – And where he may go

Antero Niittymaki today was placed on waivers. Here are some teams I think that may pick him up.

NY Islanders: Islanders may pick him up because they are most likely willing to trade Nabokov to a team that would desperately need a goaltender. Even if Nabokov isn’t traded, he would be a great addition, especially with the goaltending situation they have been in the past few years.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Even though hes played there before, Niittymaki could be the answer for the Lightning. With no consistent goaltending, and lack of defense, Niittymaki could work out very will with this club, and is reasonable in cap hit/ cap space. If Islanders do not pick him up, I’m 99% sure and confident that Tampa Bay will.

Two other teams that may be interested in acquiring Niittymaki are the Blue Jackets, and the Ducks. The Blue Jackets, lets face it, will not be in the playoff hunt. But if they want to win some games towards the end of the year, Niittymaki  may help with the inconsistent play of Steve Mason. With the Ducks in 13th place in the Western division heading into the all star break, although not mathematically eliminated, are struggling offensively, defensively, and in goal. Adding Niittymaki will be easier to trade  Hiller for an offense-man or defense man or even Deslauriers. Deslauriers is not the future of the Ducks, at least not this years future.

With all that said, I probably make it sound like Niittymaki is all that. He’s not the greatest goaltender in the league, but he will certainly win and steal some games for certain clubs.
