Daily Round-up Feb 13

Detroit extended their home winning streak to 20 games, LA finished off a road trip with a win, and results in the Southeast continue to benefit a Florida team in search of their first playoff berth since 2000.Los Angeles will need new contributions from within if they are to improve their offense without making a major trade. They got just that on Sunday night against Pacific division rivals Dallas. Jordan Nolan and Dwight King scored their first career NHL goals, while Andrei Loktionov scored just his second goal of the season. Justin Williams hit the empty net and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves as the Kings finished 2-3-1 on their six-game road trip. Loui Eriksson and Michael Ryder scored for the Stars, who missed the opportunity to close to within two points of LA.

Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves as St Louis blanked San Jose 3-0 to earn their fourth straight win and stay hot on the heels of Detroit and the Rangers for the top spot in the league. Alex Pietrangelo scored two goals and assisted on David Perron’s tally, while the Sharks struggled to generate anything offensively. Antti Niemi made 25 saves in the loss as San Jose fell to 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.

Corey Perry scored a hat-trick, Jason Blake and Bobby Ryan also scored as Anaheim kept on rolling with a 5-3 win over Columbus. Jonas Hiller made 24 saves as the Ducks improved to 1-0-1 on a critical eight-game road trip, they are currently nine points adrift of eighth place. Steve Mason made 30 saves, while Fedor Tyutin, Aaron Johnson and Antoine Vermette tallied for the Blue Jackets.

Chalk up number 20 in a row at home for Detroit. The Red Wings had to fight hard, but they eventually earned a 4-3 win over Philadelphia tying the record for consecutive NHL home wins in the process. Niklas Kronwall, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen scored for Detroit, while Joey MacDonald made 26 saves. The Flyers finished a bad weekend and have just three wins in their last 10 games. Brayden Schenn scored twice, and Maxime Talbot also scored.

The Rangers won their third straight and seventh out of their last nine as Washington’s troubles on the road persist. Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh and Brandon Prust scored the goals for New York, while Henrik Lundqvist got a back-to-back start making 24 saves. Alex Semin and John Carlson scored for the Capitals, who fell four points behind Florida in the Southeast, but remain one point behind Toronto with a game in hand. Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves.

Florida capped off a successful weekend with a 4-1 win against the Islanders. Frans Nielson scored an early goal as New York aimed to keep up good recent form. However, Tyson Strachan tied it up in the first period, and the Panthers would control the second. Tomas Fleischmann, Kris Versteeg and Jack Skille all scored, while Jose Theodore finished with 26 saves in his first start since Jan 20.

Evgeni Malkin and Pittsburgh’s top line seem pretty much unstoppable right now. Tampa Bay were the latest team to find out as their slim playoff hopes took a dent in a 4-2 loss. Malkin followed up a five-point night on Saturday with two goals, Chris Kunitz scored and added two assists, and James Neal registered three assists. Kris Letang scored the other goal for the Penguins, while Mathieu Garon made 37 saves in what was a valiant effort in the Lightning net.
