Loyal Chiarelli Earning Good Reputation
For a significant period of time, the Boston Bruins earned a reputation as the team that always had a contract dispute. However, since Peter Chiarelli took the helm as General Manager, contract signing has generally been done promptly and this franchise is now starting to earn a positive reputation as extremely loyal and tidy in its negotiations. The re-signing of Johnny Boychuk to a three-year deal this week is the perfect example of Chiarelli’s philosophy and it completes another good bit of business.On the face of it, the question surrounding Boychuk’s new deal is, why sign him to $3.36 million for three years? He isn’t exceptional defensively, his offensive game has stagnated, and surely the team should have been able to negotiate him down. The answer is simple. Boychuk is a Bruin. He plays with his heart on his sleeve, buys in perfectly to coach Claude Julien’ system, and fits into the line-up playing nicely alongside Zdeno Chara. On another note, he has also been a bull in each of the last two postseasons.
There were several question marks raised when Chiarelli re-signed veteran defenseman Andrew Ference to a three-year deal two seasons ago. Ference had not enjoyed the best seasons prior to that, and it appeared that the blue-line was over-crowded in Boston. However, Ference has more than rewarded his GM with stellar play since he signed that new contract.
Chiarelli has built an affordable blue-line based around Chara as the focal point and a group of players who fit the mould of a Bruins defenseman. Boychuk may never be a headline grabbing player, but it looks very likely that he will be a solid 20-22 minute per night blue-liner, who plays a physical game with an edge and contributes some limited offense.
The Bruins know what they are getting, and they are starting to build a positive culture of loyalty and reward. The tightness of this team has been critical to its success during the last few seasons, where they have made the playoffs four years in a row (looks the fifth in 2012), and obviously won the Cup last summer.
