Chicago finally won a game, Philadelphia’s offense exploded, Tampa Bay and San Jose fought out an excellent game after their trade and two games involving #7-#10 in the West continue to make that race absolutely fascinating.
Dallas got an extremely valuable 3-2 OT victory against Calgary. Mike Ribeiro’s goal in the extra period snapped a three-game losing streak for the Stars, who move within four points of eighth place with a game in hand. Adam Burish and Steve Ott scored the other goals for Dallas and Kari Lehtonen finished with 25 saves. Mikka Kiprusoff made 29 saves, while Jarome Iginla and Mike Cammalleri got their goals, the point leaves them two points behind seventh and eighth place.
Seventh and eighth changed hands with Phoenix’s 1-0 win against Los Angeles. The Kings didn’t give up seventh place without a fight, quite literally actually in a game where four sets of players squared off. A low-scoring affair was to be predicted between these teams. Radim Vrbata got the game’s lone goal and Mike Smith made 28 saves for the shutout as the Coyotes improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven. LA got another strong performance from Jonathan Quick (20 saves), but scoring remains a huge problem with this club as the trade deadline approaches.
Chicago finally snapped their nine-game losing streak, and they did it on the road against one of the best teams in the league in the Rangers. The Blackhawks exploded with four goals inside the first 10 minutes. Jonathan Toews, Nick Leddy, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa tallied for Chicago, while Corey Crawford finished with 20 saves. New York, who had a four-game winning streak stopped, battled back hard and pulled the scoreline back to 4-2 on goals from Marc Staal and Carl Hagelin. The Blackhawks are now four points clear of ninth place in the West.
Tampa Bay and San Jose were first involved in a trade and then involved in an interesting game of hockey on Thursday night. Martin St Louis eventually sealed it with his second goal of the game in overtime. The scoreline was 5-5 after 60 minutes of regulation with constant lead changes, but no team ever leading by more than one goal. For the Lightning, Steve Stamkos scored twice and added two assists, St Louis also potted two goals, Teddy Purcell and Steve Downie also tallied. Victor Hedman registered three assists, and Dwayne Roloson finished with 45 saves. Logan Couture, Michal Handzus, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Colin White and Tommy Wingels tallied for the Sharks, who fell to 1-1-1 on their nine-game road trip.
Buffalo took a 2-0 first period lead in their game against Philadelphia, but the Flyers offense would explode to win the game 7-2 in the end. Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek tallied for the Sabres, but Ilya Bryzgalov shut the door the rest of the way and let his offense do its job. Wayne Simmonds and Maxime Talbot had two goals each, Jakub Voracek, Scott Hartnell and Erik Gustafsson also tallied. Gustafsson’s goal was his first in the NHL. Claude Giroux also registered five assists.
St Louis beat the Islanders to stay unbeaten in regulation against Eastern conference opposition. Frans Nielson got the lone goal for New York as Brian Elliot put in yet another great performance making 26 saves. Jason Arnott, Kevin Shattenkirk, Andy McDonald, David Perron and T.J. Oshie scored the goals for a Blues team that is three points behind Detroit with a game in hand.
Winnipeg and Minnesota both entered their game chasing a playoff spot and needing a win to get back on track, Evander Kane made sure it was the Jets who came away as the happier of the two. Kane scored in the fourth round of the shootout after tallying twice in regulation. Alex Burmistrov also scored in regulation for Winnipeg, while the Wild dropped to their sixth straight defeat despite two goals from the red hot Devin Setoguchi and a tally from Mikko Koivu. Chris Mason made 22 saves in a rare start for the Jets, while Nicklas Backstrom stopped 24 for Minnesota.
