Daily Round-up Feb 18
Detroit made it 22 home wins in a row, Washington and Winnipeg also got big wins in the Southeast.
Detroit is making the headlines every time that they play a game at the moment. They beat Nashville 2-1 to make it 22 wins at home in a row. Johan Franzen and Nick Spaling traded goal in the opening two periods before a superb individual effort from Pavel Datsyuk earned the Red Wings the win with just six seconds left to play. Pekka Rinne made 29 saves, while Joey MacDonald made 20 saves.
Montreal came through in the shootout to keep their playoff hopes alive; it’s hard to see how their defeated opponents Buffalo could make it in. A couple of much maligned players in Tomas Kaberle and Scott Gomez scored to erase 1-0 and 2-1 deficits for the Canadiens. Chris Campoli gave Montreal a 3-2 lead in the second period, but Tyler Ennis forced the game beyond regulation with a third period tally. Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais converted in the shootout. Carey Price made 27 saves in the win. Robyn Regehr and Tyler Myers scored the other goals for the Sabres.
Washington continues to just about stay in the hunt for the Southeast division title with wins over current division leaders Florida. They did it again on Friday night with Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin scoring third period goals to overturn a 1-0 deficit for the Capitals. Tomas Vokoun stopped 22 shots. Jose Theodore made 38 saves at the other end, while Tomas Fleischmann scored the lone goal. Washington’s win moves them to within two points of the Panthers.
Winnipeg has forced its name back into playoff contention. They beat Boston 4-2 for a second consecutive win. Bryan Little scored twice, while Blake Wheeler tallied and added two assists. Alex Burmistrov also tallied, while Ondrej Pavelec stopped 31 shots. David Krejci and Jordan Caron scored the goals for the Bruins. The Jets are now two points behind eighth place Toronto and three points behind Southeast leaders Florida. It should be noted that the Maple Leafs have two games in hand, and the Panthers three.
Colorado moved to within three points of eighth place with a 3-1 road win over Edmonton. Erik Johnson, Mark Olver and Gabriel Landeskog scored the goals for the Avalanche, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 shots. Ryan Jones scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who are falling off the pace in 14th in the West.
Patrik Elias scored the winner in the shootout as New Jersey beat Anaheim 3-2 in SO to move up to fifth in the Eastern conference. Adam Henrique and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored goals in the first half of the second period as the Devils took a 2-0 lead, but the in-form Ducks pulled one back through Corey Perry before the second intermission. Sheldon Brookbank tied it up with just over two minutes left, but New Jersey would improve to 10-3 in the shootout. Martin Brodeur finished with 36 saves, while Jonas Hiller stopped 25.
Playoff teams and playoff hopefuls will not have an easy time when they travel to Carolina. The Hurricanes beat San Jose 3-2 and are now 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk scored in the first period to give Carolina a 2-0 lead, but a dominant third period almost tilted it for the Sharks. Dan Boyle and Brent Burns scored to tie it up, before Jussi Jokinen got a momentum turner with eight minutes to play. Justin Peters got the win making 35 saves in just his third start this season.
