Trade Market: Defensemen
Recent moves have seen the trade market for blue-liners significantly thinned, though a couple of teams that have been looking for defensemen in Nashville and Philaelphia, are not looking anymore. This article briefly outlines some of the players still left on the market, or possible still to enter the market.
Hot Targets
Bryan Allen (CAR)- He is experienced, physical and good on the penalty kill. Allen could just be the most highly sought after of the remaining blue-liners and he is also the most certain to be moved. Carolina don’t look set to re-sign him as they did with Tim Gleason, but because of the increased interest, there is also a chance that the team that eventually gets him will have to over-pay.
Luke Schenn (TOR)- There is no such certainty that Luke Schenn will be moved, but it is pretty certain that Toronto GM Brian Burke will want to make at least one significant move to give his team a better chance in the playoffs. Schenn is the big piece that has consistently been mentioned, is it finally time for the promising young blue-liner to try his luck elsewhere?
Johnny Oduya (WPG)- Oduya hasn’t had the best of seasons with the Jets, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a useful two-way presence on any team. Winnipeg has forced its way back into playoff consideration though, so there is a good chance that he won’t be going anywhere.
Shane O’Brien (COL)- The Avalanche will be strongly considering re-signing him, but if they drop too far behind between now and Feb 27, expect GM Greg Sherman to shop this physical blue-liner.
Sheldon Souray (DAL)- Souray has impressed in a comeback year. It isn’t clear what his relationship with Dallas is, and they are likely to stay in the hunt anyway, but more than a couple of teams will come asking.
Likely To Be Acquired By Someone
Chris Campoli (MTL)- Hasn’t really worked out in Montreal, but Campoli will almost certainly be acquired by someone. He can play on a good blue-line’s bottom pair, while bringing a solid two-way presence.
Jaroslav Spacek (CAR)- Spacek brings experience and still a pretty solid two-way game. In many ways he is the perfect pick-up as he brings a little bit of everything and a veteran presence to the bottom pair.
Brett Clark (TBL)- It hasn’t quite gone as well to plan for Clark so far this season, but he is still a versatile enough player to attract some interest.
Steve Staois (NYI)- Staois brings leadership, physicality and defensive ability. He has taken on responsibility on Long Island, but GM Garth Snow will surely shop him.
Other Possibilities
Jeff Schultz seems to have fallen out of favour with Washington and could be moved. He has always been a little bit of a slow skater, but Schultz has a fair reputation as a solid stay-at-home defenseman. Milan Jurcina and Mike Mottau are both pending UFAs on Long Island. It isn’t clear what Snow’s plan is with this blue-line, but trades cannot be ruled out with Jurcina in particular likely to attract interest. Greg Zanon and Mike Lundin are in a similar position in Minnesota. GM Chuck Fletcher is most likely to re-sign them, but the chance that they could be traded off cannot be ignored.
Other cheap pick-ups that could be made by different teams are Bruno Gervais and Matt Gilroy from Tampa Bay, Brett Lebda and Grant Clitsome from Columbus, and Randy Jones from Winnipeg.
