Daily Round-up Feb 19
It was a pretty quiet Saturday by normal standards, but there was no shortage of action all the same. It kicked off with a couple of high-scoring divisional games and ended with two more crucial games in the Western conference playoff race. Check it all out here with The5Hole’s daily round-up.
Phoenix improved to 7-0-1 in their last eight games thanks to a 2-1 overtime win over Dallas. Mikkel Boedkker and Michael Ryder traded goals during regulation, while Mike Smith (30 saves) and Kari Lehtonen (33 saves) would both impress to force the game into the extra period. A well known hero in Phoenix right now stepped up and got the overtime winner for the Coyotes as Radim Vrbata tallied his 28th of the year. The Stars are three point behind eighth place Calgary with a game in hand.
Calgary took possession of a Western conference playoff place with a 1-0 win over Los Angeles. Mike Cammalleri got the game’s only goal, while Mikka Kiprusoff made 28 saves for the shutout. The Flames are 10-3-4 since a disastrous 9-0 defeat to Boston. Jonathan Quick made 17 saves as the Kings dropped consecutive 1-0 decisions to teams just two points below them. They have now dropped to ninth in the conference and need to find a way to string a couple of wins together, and fast.
Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 6-4 in a dramatic game between the interstate rivals. Short-handed goals from Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke changed the momentum in the second period, Cooke’s was a 3v5 tally. The Flyers had built a 2-1 lead earlier in the game on two strikes from Jaromir Jagr, with Cooke having the other goal for the Penguins. Eric Wellwood tied it up at 3-3, but nine minute outburst at the start of the third with goals from Dustin Jeffrey, Pascal Dupuis and James Neal sealed it. Wayne Simmonds got one goal back for Philadelphia in the last minute of the game. Goaltending was once again a talking point as Ilya Bryzgalov let some softies in while making just three saves on 13 shots, Sergei Bobrovsky faired little better allowing three on 17.
Vancouver prevented Toronto from securing a tighter grip on a top eight place in the East. Daniel Sedin scored a goal and added three assists, Henrik Sedin had four assists, and Alex Burrows scored twice as the Canucks rolled over the Maple Leafs in a 6-2 win. Manny Malhotra, Kevin Bieksa and Sami Salo scored the other goals, while Roberto Luongo stopped 24 shots. James Reimer was pulled after allowing four goals on 18 shots, while Dion Phaneuf and Nikolai Kulemin scored for the Leafs.
Chicago made it two straight wins by crushing Columbus 6-1. Derick Brassard briefly gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead when he capitalised on a turnover, but it would be short-lived. Jonathan Toews, Viktor Stalberg, Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, Sami Lepisto and Marcus Kruger scored the goals for the Blackhawks, while Corey Crawford made 33 saves. They return home for a three-game homestand currently owning a four-point advantage over eighth.
St Louis shutout Minnesota 4-0 to keep their pressure up on the leaders. It was an efficient performance as the Blues outshot the Wild 34-13. Ryan Reaves, Barret Jackman, Andy McDonald and Vladimir Sobotka tallied, while Brian Elliot got the shutout with a 13-save effort. Minnesota dropped to 0-5-2 in their last seven games, and are now six points out of a playoff spot.
Tampa Bay continue to battle despite veterans being shipped out, while Washington continue to squander opportunities to jump into the East’s top eight. Tom Pyatt and Steve Stamkos tallied for the Lightning as they won their second straight and pulled to within six points of eighth place in the playoffs. Mathieu Garon made 23 saves in the win, conceding just the one goal to Brooks Laich. The Capitals remain one point behind Toronto for eighth.
The Islanders just about kept their challenge for a playoff spot up as they battled off Carolina for a 4-3 win. Jonathan Tavares scored twice, Frans Nielson and Kyle Okposo also scored, while Kevin Poulin continues to impress in his short stints in the NHL, he made 33 saves for the win this time. Brandon Sutter, Jiri Tlusty and Jaroslav Spacek scored for the Hurricanes, who lost top goaltender Cam Ward to injury during this game.
