Daily Round-up Feb 20
Hockey Day In America was a busy day for the NHL as expected. Playoff races in both conferences are heating up and Detroit just keeps on rolling with a 23rd consecutive home victory.
Winnipeg are back at home and making some noise once again. They secured their third straight victory with a 5-1 decision over Colorado. Evander Kane, Kyle Wellwood and Andrew Ladd scored, while Bryan Little tallied twice. Blake Wheeler tallied four assists, while Ondrej Pavelec stopped 31 shots. Gabriel Landeskog continued his fine rookie season with his 15th goal for the Avalanche, but Colorado missed out on the chance to close the gap between themselves and eighth to one point.
New Jersey beat Montreal 3-1 for their third straight win and moved up to fourth place in the conference. The Devils have been dominant since the All-Star break and are now eight points clear of ninth place in the East. Martin Brodeur made 21 saves in the win. Zach Parise, David Clarkson and Matt Taormina scored for New Jersey, while Max Pacioretty scored the lone goal for the Canadiens. Carey Price stopped 22 shots, but his team remains six points adrift in the race for the playoffs.
Could Anaheim actually pull this off? They beat Florida 2-0 on Sunday and are now within five points of eighth place in the West. They are 4-0-2 on a season high eight-game road trip, and suddenly the Ducks are almost expected to make it back into this race. Jonas Hiller stopped 31 shots to secure his third shutout of the season. Teemu Selanne and Niklas Hagman had the goals, while Jose Theodore stopped 25 shots for the Panthers. The loss was the third straight for Florida.
Buffalo broke out of their 0-3-1 slump, and they broke out of a serious offensive slump in the process. The Sabres exploded for six goals in a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh. Derek Roy had his best game of the season scoring two goals and adding an assist, while Jason Pominville also had a three-point night. Paul Gaustad, Drew Stafford and Tyler Ennis also scored for Buffalo, while Deryk Engelland and Jordan Staal tallied for the Penguins. Ryan Miller stopped 24 shots. Brent Johnson was pulled after allowing three goals on 12 shots, but Marc-Andre Fleury would finish with identical statistics in relief.
Every time you sign a team’s death warrant, they find a way to sneak back into playoff contention. Minnesota became the latest team to pull of that stunt shutting out Boston in a 2-0 win to pull within four points of eighth place in the West. Nicklas Backstrom stepped up with an incredible 48-save effort to secure the shutout and will his team to victory. Chad Rau and Matt Cullen had second period goals with Tim Thomas making 27 saves in the loss.
Dallas’s playoff chances took a hit as they suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Nashville. Michael Ryder opened the scoring for the Stars, before Gabriel Bourque tied it up with five minutes left in the first period. Shea Weber scored a goal in the last second of the game, and it proved a momentum turner. Colin Wilson made it 3-1, while Pekka Rinne made 22 saves. Kari Lehtonen stopped 18 shots and Alex Goligoski made it 3-2 late in the third, but Dallas continues to struggle at just the wrong time.
Detroit made it 23 home victories in a row, and incidentally, they are also on a six-game winning streak overall. Sunday’s victim was the San Jose Sharks, a tricky opponent in recent times, but one controlled easily enough in this fixture. Henrik Zetterberg, Drew Miller and Darren Helm tallied for the Red Wings, while Joey MacDonald just continues to be solid making 30 saves in this one. Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau scored for a Sharks team that are win-less in three straight. San Jose don’t get mentioned in the playoff race talk too much, but despite owning games in hand, perhaps they ought to be, they’re just four points clear of ninth place.
Corey Crawford made 29 saves and Chicago engineered a third period comeback against St Louis. Andy McDonald scored the lone goal for the Blues, who have been almost unbeatable with the lead after two periods, but Duncan Keith tied it up early in the period, and Dave Bolland scored to give the Blackhawks the lead before the midway mark. Marian Hossa potted an empty netter to ensure that the Hawks secured their third straight win. Brian Elliot made 24 saves in the loss.
Vancouver continue to keep pace with Detroit and the Rangers. They beat Edmonton 5-2 for their fourth straight win, their lead in the Northwest division is the largest in the league at 17 points. Henrik Sedin, Sami Salo, Kevin Bieksa, Chris Higgins and Daniel Sedin scored the goals for the Canucks with Cory Schneider making 26 saves. Shawn Horcoff and Magnus Paajarvi scored the goals for the Oilers, who look set to have a top two pick again in 2012.
The Rangers beat Columbus 3-2 in overtime in a match-up between the East’s top team and the West’s bottom club. The Blue Jackets put up a battle though, Steve Mason made 32 saves, while Derick Brassard and Rick Nash scored to force the game beyond regulation. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 23 shots for New York, Brad Richards and Artem Anisimov scored in regulation before Derek Stepan finished the game off in the extra period.
