Pronger and Savard Still Struggling
It seems like a long time ago now that it was announced that Chris Pronger would miss the rest of the season with a concussion. Concussion have become a normal part of life for fans of the NHL. There are times where every other week a player seems to be going down either with concussion symptoms or an ‘upper body injury’ right after they took a head hit. Of course, most of these players come back, or for most of these players, it seems like getting back into the line-up is the biggest concern e.g. Sidney Crosby.
However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that there is a bigger, more serious issue relating to concussions as well. Philadelphia captain and defenseman Chris Pronger, and Boston forward Marc Savard know that all too well. Pronger’s story made it into the headlines after his wife was asked questions about his condition. Her reply was unnerving “Unfortunately I can’t report any major improvement”. When pressed further, though she understandably didn’t want to talk about specifics, she would only say “He is not himself and not in a good way”.
Post-concussion syndrome can involve so many different issues. Savard is reportedly an assistant coach on his son’s local junior team, but latest reports suggested that the forward still suffers from short-term memory loss and headaches.
For players like Pronger and Savard, both excellent players, getting back onto the ice is not their number one priority. Simply returning to a better standard of life is their main aim. Not being able to do lots of exercise, or be concussion symptom free is a far greater concern than greater goals of returning to NHL hockey again.
Savard’s future is looking less and less likely to be in the NHL again. However, it is fair to say that while it may not be their biggest concern right now, there would be a huge celebration in the league if Pronger and Savard were able to return.
